Australian Press Releases

Harry Millers Production – Jesus Christ Superstar (1975, 1983 & 1984)

1) Raymond Duparc is Pontius Pilate and with his good resonate voice reinforced by a distinctive dramatic presence, he is outstanding.

2) Trevor White seems an ideal Jesus Christ in every way, Stacey Teatro sang “I don’t know how to love him” well and “Could we start again” even better, and Raymond Duparc, classically the best singer in the production, was an imposing Pontius Pilate.

3)  Raymond Duparc proves once again what a loss he is to Perth with an interpretation of Pontius Pilate which just be the definitive one.

4) For only Raymond Duparc as Pontius Pilate succeeds in drawing another character worth remembering.

House Guest (1982)

Raymond Duparc, as the arch villain Burford, accelerates the pace and the atmosphere, begins to crackle with electricity when he is around.

Pygmalion (1981)

Raymond Duparc’s characterisation of the egocentric phonetics boffin Higgins was wonderfully detailed.  This accomplished actor certainly made excellent use of the stage.  His Higgins was a middle-aged boy with an injured air, a refreshing change from the ultra-bored, urban Higginses that usually grace stage and screen.

Candida (1980)

… Candida’s Christian so specialist person – husband, Morell is in an equally superb professional portrait given by Raymond Duparc, a do good man brought down by the crush of his Candida and posturing crush that Geoff Cartwright’s romantic poet has on her.

Fanny (1979)

Raymond Duparc’s Cesar is a lovable roué with a worldly-wise attitude to solving most problems nature throws up.  One remembers him in many fine stage roles, not the least of which was his elegant Sir Arthur Sullivan in Marian Street’s smash hit Tarantara! Tarantara!  the year before last.  Cesar pursues his own routine tirelessly, but he always has time for everyone’s troubles.  It is a nice portrait and it stays in the mind.

Ten Times Table (1979)

Raymond Duparc, immaculate and immobile as the alcoholic, one of the best things I’ve seen him do.

The Misenthrope, Opera House, Sydney (1978)

… two exceptions were Raymond Duparc, who brought a fine sense of style and flair to Philinte and Judy Nunn, the bitchy Arsinor.

Tarantara! Tarantara! (1977)

Raymond Duparc (a memorable Sir Arthur Sullivan in the highly successful Tarantara! Tarantar! and many other roles) is always a pleasure to watch.

Taming of the Shrew (1975)

As Baptisite, Raymond Duparc again gives a fine performance.   In fact I have yet to see him in other than top form, whether playing pantomime or drama.  Clear of diction, easy of movement, his is the essence of the polished performer.

Dragon Variation (1974)

1) Raymond Duparc plays the stranger, and also Roger Mitford, the squire, Porteous Larrimore, a camp litterateur, Owen Glendower, a seedy old Welsh schoolmaster ….  and Paul Stivee, an ex-Hungarian revolutionary.  Mr Duparc is splendid, never faltering, though switching roles and accents on and off like a neon sign, he is always equal to his heavy burden and brings each personality to life with admirable style.  A good, well written, well produced play with care and performed with professionally ability.

2)  Raymond Duparc makes quite a magnificent job of playing five actors, the actor, the stranger, the squire, the barber and the Welsh school-master.

Richard II (1972)

As Richard, Raymond Duparc, began slowly but added structure and breadth to play the character as the play progressed.  He played Richard as a king who although was romantic and weak, never lost his aura of majesty.

Anything Goes (1971)

The first-rate actor-singer Raymond Duparc, is ideally cast as a titled Englishman and Barbara Wyndon was in great form as Hope Harcourt.

A Rum Do (1970)

1) Author of the work is Rob Inglis and the composer Robin Wood.  They have captured the spirit of the period and the sincerity of Macquarie, played magnificently by former Englishman Raymond Duparc.  Duparc’s success in this show has earned him a high plane in contemporary Australian theatre.  His resounding baritone dominates the stage.

2)  Eaymond Duparc, as governor Macquarie, the builder, was superb.  Acting in a manner always to emphasise the complexity of Macquarie’s character, he dominated the stage, except when sharing it with Elaine Cusick as his wife Elizabeth.

3) …the shows chief asset is the fine voice and personality of Raymond Duparc as Macquaire.  Mr Duparc is an English actor-singer who migrated here recently and should prove a valuable property.

4) … such an exciting, memorable production could not have been achieved without the professionalism of the actors.  Raymond Duparc drew a tender yet determined characterisation of Macquarie, fully realising the numerous contrasts and subtleties inherent in the role.

Kismet (date unknown)

1) They have the advantage of Raymond Duparc who portrays, Hajj with skill, power and consummate charm.  His acting is vital and varied and his signing is worthy of the music-based on the exotic themes of Borodin.  Dominating the stage was Raymond Duparc as the Baghdad poet who launched the frail craft of his destiny on the uncertain currents of his fate, and after being tossed this way and that, between life and death, fortune and poverty, fame and obscurity, finally reaching a safe harbour.

2) Excellent Lead – His professional assurance, fine voice and superb technique carried him on the crest of the wave throughout the show, and he depicted the many sides of the character-rogue Rhymester Humorist, father and lover – with mercurial charm.  The show leapt into life every time he appeared and his historic defence of his right hand doomed to be cut off when he is convicted of stealing, was one of the most fascinating highlights.  With so excellent a leading man, it was inevitable that with the slightest imperfections in the smaller parts should stand out in high relief, but luckily these were not sufficiently marked t spoil the production.

Leah Bateman aka Leah Bateman-Hunter

The following is a summary Leah Batemen’s reported theatrical credits, gleaned through trawling many theatrical publications, documents and archives, magazine and newspaper articles.  This may not be the complete listing of Leah Bateman’s theatre credits but hopefully the list is the most comprehensive.  The stage name Leah Bateman is credited throughout unless otherwise stated, along with the name of the character, where known, that she was playing.  Theatrical appearances marked with an * indicate that both Lean Bateman and Terence O’Brien were in the production, either as actress/actor or actress/producer.

Ruth Spalding

The following is a summary Ruth Spalding’s reported theatrical, radio and book credits, gleaned through trawling many theatrical publications, documents and archives, magazine and newspaper articles.  This may not be the complete listing of Ruth Spalding’s theatre credits but hopefully the list is the most comprehensive.  The stage name Ruth Spalding is credited throughout, along with the name of the character, where known, that she was playing.  The theatrical appearances marked with an * indicate that both Ruth Spalding and Terence O’Brien were in the production, either as actress/actor, actress/producer or producer/actor.
