24th March 2024 Meeting including Cottages on The Commons around Felbridge
Jeremy Clarke, Vice-president of the Wealden Buildings Study Group, will be taking us through local examples of the timber-framed buildings built upon the commons around Felbridge including the east end of Copthorne Common. It will explore the notion that cottages were often illicitly built upon encroachments of the common and look at what local evidence there is to support or refute this theory. The talk will be accompanied by a display of local maps showing the commons from the 18th century onwards leading up to the early 19th century Enclosure Acts.
26th May 2024 Meeting including a talk on the Newchapel Area
